Daily deal industry’s billing grew 2pct in November

Last November was slightly good for the North American daily deal industry as despite one per cent drop in numbers of daily deals its gross billings soared two per cent over October.

The numbers of deals were recorded at 39,141 as against 39,434 earlier, according to the Yipit data report. Gross billing jumped to $273 million from $267 million.

The industry leader Groupon travelled on the trail of success by scoring the highest billings of $154 million in November, indicating a six per cent upswing from $145 million in October on the back of consumer goods and travel deals. The top line accounts for more than half of the total gross billing of the daily deal industry in North America.

The researcher also noted the cannibalization of Groupon’s local core deals by its national deals Grouponicus. Thanksgiving weekend (Nov 26-27) was a shopping fiesta rejoicing at over one billion dollars online spending by consumers, according to the comScore. The special day may have led to overshadowing of local deals, experts believed.

The recent face-lifting of merchant’s dashboard by the online group buying father is expected to pave the way for its strong relationship with the advertisers of coupons.

As a 2012’s gift to the merchants, it has dolled up its Merchant Centre and added features to keep them updated of demographics including gender, zip codes, etc. of the buyers. A merchant can monitor the information including customer’s comments about Groupon Now—mobile deals—as well as other hot deals on real-time.

“A significant addition to the new Merchant Center is customer feedback,” wrote Amit Koren, senior product manager, in a Groupon’s blog. “To date, over one million consumers have provided feedback to Groupon merchants.”

The Yipit data report noted five per cent decrease in LivingSocial’s billing to $52 million from $54 million. Travelzoo clinched third position by recording significant jump in gross billing to seven million dollars from five million dollars, up 44 per cent. AmazonLocal and GoogleOffers registered $5.8 million and $3.5 million billing in November.
